What is Dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia, also known as “mathematical dyslexia”, is a biology-based specific developmental disorder that affects an individual’s ability to understand and use mathematical symbols and arithmetic operations.

• Unrelated to Intelligence: Intellectual levels are completely normal.

• Unrelated to Teaching Methods: The difficulties persist even when receiving high-quality instruction.

• Attention Issues are a Result: These stem from the different way the brain processes mathematical information, rather than an issue with the individual’s attitude.

Causes

• Neurological Dysfunction: Dysfunction of the intraparietal sulcus, which directly impacts number processing.

• Cognitive Deficits: Insufficient working memory and short-term memory, as well as difficulties with concentration.

• Information Processing Difficulties: Impairments in encoding, storing, and retrieving mathematical knowledge.

Support and Intervention Strategies

  • Early Assessment and Diagnosis: Seek professional assistance as soon as possible.

  • Concrete-to-Abstract Teaching: Use physical building blocks or coins first, before introducing abstract symbols.

  • Diverse and Engaging Practice: Utilize gamification and multi-sensory activities.

  • Real-World Application: Practice math through everyday activities like shopping and cooking.

  • Make Good Use of Assistive Tools: Leverage calculators, computer software, and digital tools.

  • Develop Problem-Solving Strategies: Teach methods like drawing diagrams, breaking down numbers, and choosing the right approach for each problem.
